Betty needed to remodel her kitchen AND stay within a set budget. She thought things through according to her knowledge of what it would cost, and presented her plan to Scott Goode, a 3Day Kitchen & Bath contractor based in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The Wish List
- New flooring
- New cabinetry
- New lighting
- Open to the dining room
I spoke with Scott recently, and he wanted to tell her story – because he saw a few important things come to light during the consultation and design presentation.
- The value of listening to his client to determine needs and preferences,
- His ability to view the space objectively and use design experience to maximize available options, and
- A strong commitment to honor his client’s budget AND deliver a remodel that was more than they had expected.
Before
The kitchen was a galley space, lined with cabinets featuring soffits above. On one side of the kitchen, lower cabinets served as a bar area – with upper cabinets installed above. You can picture it now, right? Think 1960-1970: dark wood, poor lighting, and a little claustrophobic with the upper cabinets hanging over the bar counter.
Betty had settled on keeping the kitchen’s footprint, just updating cabinetry, lighting, and flooring. After all, she knew what a project like this could cost, and she needed to stay within her budget.
When she shared her ideas with Scott he listened thoroughly. As she talked, he noticed some possibilities she hadn’t considered. He examined the space well, took measurements, and then went back to his office and designed a kitchen that would give her more kitchen space and openness than she had even imagined. And, the important thing? She would stay within her budget.
An objective view, combined with design experience, can create a remarkable plan for transformation in a home! When Betty described her plans for the kitchen space, Scott understood her REAL needs: more space, white cabinets, and an open feeling. So his design took over a minimally-used storage closet and expanded the space so it could open up into the dining area — beyond those soffits that had contained the galley kitchen for so long.
Notice the ceiling in the AFTER picture below. You can see the the remaining soffits that once sandwiched the kitchen space. What a transformation!

Betty was so impressed, she gave a 5 Star Review!
Our kitchen was done in four days! And it was beyond anything we had imagined. We have had so many positive comments and have already begun recommending this company!
The Project
Scott described this job as perhaps the most reasonable kitchen he has designed and completed. He attributes the success to
- listening carefully to the client’s needs,
- viewing the space objectively and relying on years of design experience, and
- honoring the client’s budget.
After
When Betty walked into her new kitchen she exclaimed:
I can’t believe this is MY kitchen! It changes our whole house!
